Karnataka's beer enthusiasts may soon find their favorite brew a bit harder to afford. The state government is deliberating a potential beer price hike, marking what could be the third increase in just over a year. Excise Minister RB Thimmapur confirmed ongoing discussions but stressed that no decision has been finalized yet.

Unlike liquor, which remains unaffected for now, beer has been singled out for potential price adjustments. “We are contemplating a price hike for beer,” Thimmapur said, adding that consultations with the Chief Minister are pending before any decision is reached.

The possibility of higher beer prices comes on the back of rising living costs in Karnataka, including increased bus fares and proposed hikes in water and metro tariffs. Critics argue that the cumulative effect of these changes is burdening citizens.

This isn't the first time beer prices have come under scrutiny. The Congress-led government had already raised beer prices by 10% in July 2023 and proposed higher excise duties on strong beer in August 2024. If approved, this will be the third such hike, drawing concerns about affordability and access for consumers.

While the government views these measures as essential for boosting revenue, skeptics question their fairness. "At a time when people are grappling with costlier services, yet another hike will only add to their woes," noted a Bengaluru-based analyst.

As beer enthusiasts await a final decision, the debate highlights broader concerns about balancing fiscal policies with public affordability, leaving many wondering if their next cheers will come with a steeper price tag.
