India has extended the visa of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's deposed Prime Minister, who has been living in a safehouse in Delhi since August 2024. Her stay follows her dramatic escape from Dhaka amid violent student-led protests that claimed over 500 lives. While India's move is described as a “technical extension,” sources emphasized that it should not be interpreted as asylum, given India's lack of specific legislation for granting refuge.
The interim government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, formally requested Hasina's extradition on December 23. They allege her involvement in enforced disappearances and killings during the 2024 protests. Bangladesh's immigration authorities have also revoked her passport alongside 96 others accused of similar charges. However, critics argue that these actions are politically motivated, designed to stifle opposition and consolidate Yunus's government ahead of the upcoming elections.
India now faces a complex diplomatic challenge. Supporting Hasina could strain ties with Dhaka, while complying with extradition demands may contradict India’s stance on political asylum. Hasina's presence underlines deeper political instability in Bangladesh, where violent protests and suppression of dissent remain rampant.
The situation highlights the precarious balance India must strike in maintaining regional diplomacy while addressing humanitarian and political pressures. With mounting international scrutiny over Bangladesh's handling of opposition leaders, the unfolding events could significantly shape South Asia's political landscape.
