Why is Canadian PM Justin Trudeau expected to resign amid Khalistani unrest?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly poised to step down as leader of the Liberal Party, marking the possible end of an era that began in 2013 when he revived a floundering party. Sources suggest Trudeau may announce his resignation on Monday, ahead of a pivotal national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

This development comes amidst plummeting poll numbers, signaling a likely electoral defeat to the opposition Conservatives in October. Trudeau’s leadership has faced mounting criticism within the party, with significant dissent emerging from caucuses in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Quebec — regions critical to the Liberals' dwindling parliamentary majority.

Further fueling speculation, Chrystia Freeland, once Trudeau’s deputy prime minister and finance minister, resigned last month following a clash over fiscal policy. Freeland condemned Trudeau’s proposed spending increases as “political gimmicks,” warning of looming economic threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trudeau’s possible departure has ignited discussions about his successor. Potential contenders include Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, former central banker Mark Carney, and ex-British Columbia Premier Christy Clark. A rapid leadership change could pave the way for a snap election, as the Liberals grapple with preparing for the political challenges posed by the Trump administration.

Having led his party from obscurity to power in 2015, Trudeau’s legacy is now under scrutiny. With internal divisions and external pressures mounting, the coming days may define his final act on the political stage.
