Love swimming? Here’s how to stop chlorine from wrecking your skin

Swimming is an excellent way to stay fit, but the chlorine in pools can be harsh on your skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and other issues. To protect your skin and maintain its health, it's essential to follow a comprehensive skincare routine before and after swimming.

Pre-Swim Skincare Routine

  1. Pre-Swim Rinse: Showering before entering the pool helps reduce the amount of chlorine your skin absorbs. Wet skin absorbs less chlorine than dry skin, minimizing potential damage. 

  2. Apply a Barrier Cream or Natural Oil: Using a barrier cream or natural oils like coconut or almond oil creates a protective layer on your skin, preventing chlorine from penetrating deeply. 

  3. Use Water-Resistant Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, especially if swimming outdoors.

 

Post-Swim Skincare Routine

  1. Immediate Rinse: After swimming, rinse off immediately with lukewarm water to remove chlorine residues.

  2. Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, soap-free cleanser to wash your skin, ensuring that any remaining chlorine is removed without stripping natural oils. 

  3. Moisturize Thoroughly: Apply a hydrating moisturizer to replenish lost moisture and restore the skin's barrier. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.

  4. Weekly Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate your skin once a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent buildup, which can be exacerbated by chlorine exposure

Now you can enjoy swimming while keeping your skin healthy and protected from chlorine damage!
