The Kolhapuri chappal is a world-famous handcrafted leather sandal originating from Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Known for its durability, comfort, and intricate design, this footwear has deep cultural roots and dates back to the 13th century.
Traditionally made from buffalo or cowhide and stitched without nails, these chappals were originally thick and heavy, ideal for rough terrain. Over time, they evolved in design and gained popularity across India and globally.
Each Kolhapuri variant-like Kapashi, Paytaan, and Pukari—is named after its region and boasts unique characteristics. Modern versions are embellished with zari, pom-poms, and bright colors, appealing to younger buyers.
Despite its popularity, artisans face financial difficulties, rising raw material costs, and competition from imitations.
Most production occurs in cottage industries employing entire families, especially in Kolhapur and nearby districts.
Kolhapuri chappals are not just footwear-they are a symbol of Indian tradition, craftsmanship, and resilience, deserving both preservation and promotion.
