Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rising North East Summit at Bharat Mandapam, Delhi, on Friday, emphasizing the Northeast’s pivotal role in India’s development. Describing the region as the most diverse part of India, he highlighted its strengths in trade, tradition, textiles, and tourism. “The Northeast is our Ashtalakshmi, a powerhouse of energy, bio-economy, bamboo, tea, petroleum, sports, skill, and organic products,” PM Modi said, likening it to the Hindu goddess of wealth.
He underscored the region’s significance in building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), stating, “The development of Eastern India is crucial, and the Northeast is its cornerstone.” For the government, EAST stands for Empower, Act, Strengthen, and Transform, reflecting its policy for the region. The two-day summit, held on May 23-24, aims to position the Northeast as a hub for global and domestic investment, showcasing its potential in ecotourism and organic products. PM Modi affirmed, “Every state in the Northeast is ready for investment and leadership,” signaling a transformative future for the region.
