Trump just slapped India with a 200% blow - your meds could get costlier!

President Donald Trump has announced sweeping tariffs targeting BRICS nations, including a 10% charge on all member countries and specific levies on key Indian exports. Trump declared 50% tariffs on copper and threatened pharmaceutical tariffs up to 200%, though he indicated a one-year delay for the latter.

The measures significantly impact India, where the US represents the largest pharmaceutical export market at $9.8 billion in 2024-25, comprising 40% of total pharma exports. For copper, India exported $360 million to the US from $2 billion total exports.

Trump criticized BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Indonesia—claiming the group aims to "hurt" the US and "degenerate" the dollar. Most tariffs take effect August 1, while India hopes ongoing negotiations will secure favorable trade terms.
