In India, security for VVIPs and VIPs is based on their threat perception, assessed by intelligence agencies. This system has six main levels – SPG, Z+, Z, Y, X, and local/police security – each designed to provide protection based on the risk involved.
At the top is the Special Protection Group (SPG), formed in 1988 after Indira Gandhi’s assassination. It safeguards the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers, and their families, with over 4,000 elite commandos. Currently, only six people enjoy this exclusive protection.
Next is Z+ security, which deploys 55 personnel, including NSG commandos, to protect leaders like Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath. Z security provides 22 guards and is assigned to personalities such as Aamir Khan and Baba Ramdev.
Y and X categories offer lower-level protection, with 11 and 2 personnel respectively. Finally, local or police security is arranged by state authorities for those facing minor threats.
These layers ensure that India’s top leaders, celebrities, and public figures are safeguarded against potential dangers, combining elite forces with smart threat assessment.
