A fresh volcanic eruption was confirmed on Wednesday in southwest Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, which has seen a pattern of recurring eruptive activity since 2021 . The latest outbreak occurred along the Sundhnúkur/Svartsengi fissure system, marking the ninth eruption in the current series . The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported ongoing magma accumulation beneath Svartsengi, and uplift and micro-earthquakes indicate potential for further eruptions.
In past events, small towns like Grindavík and tourist areas such as the Blue Lagoon have been evacuated with man-made barriers constructed to.redirect lava flows . Despite the volcanic activity, flights through Keflavík International Airport have remained unaffected and no ash clouds have been reported, as these are predominantly fissure-type, effusive eruptions .
Scientists warn this active phase - termed the “New Reykjanes Fires” - could continue for decades, echoing medieval eruptions from 1210 to 1240. Monitoring remains intense as residents and authorities prepare for further seismic and volcanic events.
