A fashion show held in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir, has sparked huge controversy, especially because it took place during the holy month of Ramzan. The event, featuring models in skiwear, angered religious leaders and local communities, who called it a "cultural invasion."
J&K's Grand Mufti, Nasir-ur-Islam, strongly condemned the show, saying that it went against the region's traditions and religious values. He demanded legal action and urged the central government to intervene.
Kashmir's chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also expressed outrage, calling the event "obscene" and deeply disrespectful to Islamic beliefs.
As the backlash grew, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ordered an inquiry into the event. The controversy even led to protests in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Many people questioned how such an event was allowed in the first place, especially in a place as sensitive as Kashmir.
In response, the designers of the show, Shivan & Narresh, issued an apology. They stated that their intention was only to celebrate creativity and skiing culture, not to offend anyone. They promised to be more respectful in the future and acknowledged the concerns raised by the public.
However, the debate continues. While some see the event as disrespectful, others argue that it was simply a fashion show and should not have been taken as an attack on religious values.
The incident raises important questions about the balance between culture, religion, and artistic freedom in India.
