The world is getting hotter, and scientists now believe extreme heat may speed up aging in humans. Long-term exposure to high temperatures can harm the body in many ways, making people look and feel older than they really are. But how does this happen?
When the body is exposed to extreme heat, it works harder to cool itself down. Sweating too much can cause dehydration, which reduces the skin's elasticity, leading to wrinkles and dryness.
Heat stress also affects the heart, making it pump faster, which can increase the risk of heart disease over time.
Another major effect is on our cells. Studies suggest that heat can damage DNA and shorten telomeres, the protective caps on our chromosomes. Shorter telomeres are linked to aging, meaning extreme heat may actually speed up the aging process at a biological level.
Additionally, excessive heat can affect the brain. People living in hot climates often experience sleep problems, fatigue, and mental stress. Over time, this can lead to memory loss, slower thinking, and even an increased risk of diseases like Alzheimer's.
Poor air quality and pollution in hot areas also contribute to faster aging. Heat worsens air pollution, leading to lung damage and increasing the risk of respiratory issues.
To slow down this process, staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and using cooling methods like shade and fans can help. Climate change is not just about hotter days, it may be making us older, faster than we realize.
