Liverpool FC announced on July 11, 2025, that it will retire the No 20 jersey worn by striker Diogo Jota, marking the first time in the club’s 133‑year history such a tribute has been made. The decision, made in close consultation with Jota’s widow, Rute, and his family, extends across all levels - men's first team, LFC Women, and the academy .
Club CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, described the retirement as a “unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.” He added that “by retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal—and therefore never to be forgotten”. Jota, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3, had joined Liverpool in 2020 and made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, including an emotional winner in last season's Merseyside Derby en route to a record-equalling 20th league title .
Teammates, club staff, and fans have paid heartfelt tributes outside Anfield. Liverpool will honour Jota and his brother André Silva during a friendly match against Preston North End, with a minute’s silence, black armbands, and the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
