The Monsoon Session of India’s Parliament commenced today amid heightened political drama, with Operation Sindoor taking centre stage. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed in a pre-session all-party meeting that the government is open to debating the military response to the April terror attack in Pahalgam—provided it adheres to parliamentary conventions.
Opposition parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, Left, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT), pressed for early discussions, also challenging recent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the nation through a parliamentary statement, saying the issues at hand—Operation Sindoor, the Pahalgam intelligence lapses, Trump’s claims, and Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls—strike at the heart of national interest and the integrity of democracy.
Rijiju also revealed that a motion to impeach Justice Varma has surpassed the required 100 MP signatures. With 17 bills slated—including a new Tax Bill and proposals on GST, anti-doping reforms, and geoheritage conservation—the 32‑day session promises intense political engagements.
As MPs take their seats, debates are set to be fierce, with both sides bracing for a marathon session ending August 21.
