Rajasthan’s MoS for Home, Jawahar Singh Bedham, stirred controversy by claiming that the upcoming film Udaipur Files would “leave many people shaken.” This remark came during an NDTV interview amid ongoing legal scrutiny of the film.
Called *Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder**, the film is based on the gruesome 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur. Its release - planned for July 11—has been stayed by the Delhi High Court since July 10, pending a Central Government review under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act. The court raised concerns over communal disharmony and certification irregularities.
Filmmakers have appealed to the Supreme Court, which is expected to hear the matter on July 21 after a petition was filed against the Delhi HC’s stay. The SC emphasised the balance between Article 21 (right to life) and Article 19 (freedom of expression), deferring final action to the Central committee.
Bedham’s remarks add political heat, ahead of state elections and amid a larger national debate around censorship, communal narratives, and the responsibilities of filmmakers.
