Why do Millions of Indian Engineers still struggle for Jobs?

India creates one of the world’s largest pools of engineering graduates every year, but a major share of them still struggle to find suitable jobs. The problem is not the number of engineers, but the gap between what colleges teach and what industries actually need.
Most engineering programmes still focus heavily on theory. While students learn formulas and concepts, they rarely get enough practice with real tools, projects or industry technologies. As a result, graduates lack hands-on skills like problem-solving, communication, teamwork and digital tool familiarity, which employers now value as much as technical knowledge.
Industries like AI, data analytics, semiconductors, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing are expanding fast, yet colleges have not updated their curriculum to match these fields. Companies then spend months retraining fresh graduates, slowing down productivity.
A practical solution is work-based learning. Internships, apprenticeships and live projects help students understand workplace systems, work culture and real-world challenges. In countries like Germany, these models keep youth unemployment extremely low.
If India blends classroom learning with continuous hands-on experience, engineering graduates will not just hold degrees but become industry-ready professionals. The future depends on bridging this simple yet crucial gap.
