Towering over the southern ridge of Delhi, Tughlaqabad Fort is a crumbling yet colossal symbol of medieval military ingenuity. Built in the early 14th century by Ghiyasuddin Tughluq, the fort was once an ambitious stronghold but was soon abandoned - giving rise to one of Delhi’s most persistent urban legends.
According to popular folklore, Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya cursed the fort after a conflict with the Sultan, reportedly saying: “Ya rahe ujjar, ya base gujjar” (Let it remain deserted or be occupied by nomads). When the Sultan died under mysterious circumstances - pavilion collapsed on him - the legend only deepened.
Visitors have claimed to hear unexplained whispers and footsteps, especially at dusk, branding it “Delhi’s Bhangarh.” However, long-time guards and officials deny any paranormal activity, attributing the ghost stories to the fort’s desolate layout and folklore.
Whether you’re a history buff or ghost-hunter, Tughlaqabad remains a chilling yet captivating slice of Delhi’s haunted heritage - more myth than menace.
