The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been taken to court by the children's magazine Champak for naming an IPL robotic dog after the magazine.
The case was filed in the Delhi High Court, claiming that BCCI used the name Champak, which is a registered trademark, without permission. The robotic dog was named through fan voting on April 23, and has been mentioned regularly in the media since.
Delhi Press' lawyer, Amit Gupta, said that Champak is known for its animal characters and using the name for an AI tool during a big commercial event like the IPL causes harm to the brand.
However, the court asked how this use showed unfair commercial gain, since there was no solid proof in the documents submitted.
The magazine also complained about the use of the name 'Chiku', a Champak character, which is also the nickname of cricketer Virat Kohli.
But the court dismissed that part, saying no action had been taken earlier. Gupta replied that nicknames often come from comics or movies but added Kohli hadn’t used the name to sell any products.
