A unique cultural clash has disrupted trade talks between India and the United States - all because of "non-vegetarian milk." India has raised objections to American dairy imports, labeling them as non-vegetarian due to the diet given to cows in the US.
These cows are often fed animal-derived substances like blood meal and fish oil, which conflicts with India’s deeply rooted belief that cows - considered sacred - must follow a strictly vegetarian diet.
While US officials argue that animal-based feed does not affect the composition or safety of the milk, Indian authorities stress that this is about cultural values, not science. For many Indians, especially vegetarians, milk from a non-vegetarian-fed cow is unacceptable.
This disagreement has become a key sticking point in broader India–US trade negotiations, especially in agriculture. It highlights how cultural sensitivities can impact global commerce, and raises important questions about ethical sourcing and respect for religious beliefs in international food trade.
As talks continue, both sides are struggling to find a middle ground that respects India’s cultural norms while keeping trade flowing.
