On July 23–24, 2025, armed clashes erupted near the disputed border around the ancient Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, which straddles Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province. Thai and Cambodian soldiers exchanged gunfire and artillery fire, including rocket strikes, injuring at least three Thai civilians and two soldiers, one of whom reportedly lost a leg to shelling.
Thailand's military alleges Cambodian forces initiated the attack with heavy weapons and a surveillance drone, while Cambodia’s Defence Ministry countered that Thai troops made an “unprovoked incursion,” and their response was “strictly within the bounds of self-defence”. The confrontation follows recent tensions over landmine explosions that injured Thai soldiers and Canberra’s diplomatic downgrading - recalls and expulsions of ambassadors from both sides. The clash marks the latest escalation in a border crisis that goes back to May, prompting civilian evacuations and border sealing.
