The body of 19‑year‑old Delhi University student Sneha Debnath, originally from Tripura, was recovered from the Yamuna River beneath the Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening, marking a sorrowful end to a six‑day absence.
Sneha, a second‑year B.Sc. Mathematics student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, had gone missing on the morning of July 7. She last spoke to her family around 5:56 a.m., telling them she was heading to Sarai Rohilla Railway Station to drop off a friend named Pitunia. However, Pitunia later denied any meeting, and Sneha's phone went off by 8:45 a.m.
A handwritten note discovered at her residence suggested suicidal intent, indicating she planned to jump from the nearby Signature Bridge. Eyewitness reports and cab records confirmed she was dropped at the bridge that morning, but poor CCTV coverage there left a troubling gap in tracing her movements.
The Delhi Police, aided by NDRF teams, conducted a multi‑agency search across the Yamuna corridor—from Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida—ultimately locating her body near the Geeta Colony area. Authorities have sent the body for post‑mortem and have launched a formal investigation to confirm the cause of death.
