Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Japan for a two-day visit to attend the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit at the invitation of his counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba.
The India–Japan partnership has grown rapidly in recent years, stretching from steel plants in Gujarat to biogas projects in rural India, and from Assam’s connectivity role to research labs in Tokyo. Over 170 MoUs worth $13 billion have already been signed in just two years. More agreements are expected during this visit.
Japan is likely to announce a 10 trillion yen ($68 billion) decade-long investment plan for India, with a strong focus on AI, semiconductors, and emerging technologies. Automakers like Suzuki, Toyota, and Nippon Steel are already expanding in India, alongside real estate and energy investments. Collaboration has even reached space, with Japan’s Astroscale using ISRO’s PSLV for satellite launches.
On the geopolitical front, Modi and Ishiba are expected to discuss QUAD cooperation, especially as global trade tensions rise after the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods.
Calling this visit an opportunity to strengthen “civilisational bonds,” PM Modi said the goal is to give “new wings” to the Special Strategic and Global Partnership and shape its next phase.
