In early 2025, renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, became the world’s largest source of electricity, overtaking coal for the first time, according to the Ember report.
Solar power has grown particularly fast, increasing its share in global electricity from 6.9 % to 8.8 %, in countries like India, non-fossil fuel sources, which include renewables, hydro, and nuclear energy, now make up over half of installed electricity capacity, this shift marks a major milestone in the global transition toward cleaner energy.
However, the change is not without challenges, experts warn that coal usage could rise again in some regions if renewable generation is disrupted or demand spikes, renewable energy also brings technical and economic issues, such as the need for energy storage when the sun doesn’t shine or the wind doesn’t blow, upgrades to electricity grids, and managing costs fairly across populations.
Despite these concerns, the move toward renewables promises cleaner air, lower carbon emissions, and more sustainable energy systems, the world now stands at a turning point, balancing the benefits of green energy with the practical challenges of integrating it into everyday life.
