As remote work and constant screen use grow, so do reports of digital eye strain—dryness, blurred vision, and headaches become routine for many. While lubricating eye drops can offer temporary relief, ophthalmologists say they address just one aspect of a complex issue.
The root problem lies in altered blinking patterns—screen users blink up to 60% less, drastically reducing tear film renewal and leading to increased tear evaporation. This disrupted tear balance can also impact meibomian gland function, worsening dry-eye conditions.
Further, sustained focus on close screens strains the ciliary muscles, potentially causing headaches and blurred vision—hallmarks of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) . Blue light has become a focal point in marketing, yet evidence suggests blue-light glasses offer no more benefit than neutral filters.
Experts emphasize a multi‑pronged approach: follow the 20‑20‑20 rule (look 20 ft away every 20 min for 20 sec), consciously blink, maintain proper screen distance and lighting, and use preservative‑free artificial tears.
For persistent symptoms, optometrists also recommend checking posture, ensuring ergonomic setups, keeping indoor humidity balanced, and seeking professional eye exams. Eye drops can help—but alone they’re just one tool in maintaining healthy, comfortable eyes.
