The Kerala government has decided to quickly remove all old and unsafe structures on school and college campuses before the next academic year begins. A meeting chaired by Education Minister V. Sivankutty and Local Self‑Government Minister M.B. Rajesh emphasized that these dilapidated buildings pose real danger to students and staff, and must be taken down under disaster management laws by local authorities.
This move aims to ensure new school buildings can secure fitness certificates without delays tied to maintaining older unsafe structures. Some schools had previously been denied certificates because old structures were still standing alongside upgraded facilities.
In addition to demolition, officials will trim unsafe tree branches near school buildings and private areas to reduce risk of falling debris. District collectors have been instructed to issue orders under the Disaster Management Act for demolition and tree trimming by local bodies.
This follows recent concerns after an unused school building collapsed in Pathanamthitta, which fortunately caused no injuries but highlighted the urgent need for action.
Schools meeting safety standards will receive provisional fitness certificates, while those failing to maintain campus safety may lose certification. By prioritizing proactive removal of risks, Kerala aims to safeguard students and staff as schools reopen.
