Instagram is testing a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels, allowing users to watch short videos in a small floating window while using other apps. Similar to YouTube’s PiP, this feature will let you keep watching Reels after leaving the app, making multitasking seamless.
Spotted by researcher Radu Oncescu on Threads, Meta confirmed that the feature is rolling out to a select group of users. Those included in the test see a pop-up reading: “Try picture in picture. Turn this on to continue watching reels in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram.”
For creators, this could mean higher video retention and engagement, especially for longer Reels, as viewers can interact with other apps without pausing content. Users can disable PiP anytime through the three-dot menu while watching a Reel.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri hinted at this feature months ago, responding to questions about PiP support. While YouTube and TikTok have offered PiP for some time, Instagram is finally catching up, and users are eager to see if this test will expand to everyone.
With multitasking on the rise, this small window could change the way we consume content forever.
