In the heart of Kutch, a radical experiment in education is proving that a needle and thread can be as powerful as a business degree. Somaiya Kala Vidya (SKV) isn't your typical design school; it is an institution dedicated to traditional artisans who have mastered their craft over generations but often remained invisible behind big-brand labels.
By teaching "design thinking" alongside business management, SKV is helping these makers move from being anonymous "wage earners" to confident entrepreneurs who own their creative identity. The school’s impact was recently showcased on the global stage at Lakmé Fashion Week 2025, where five artisan graduates stole the show with collections that blended ancient techniques like Ajrakh, Bandhani, and Mashru weaving with modern, avant-garde silhouettes. From the "Eternal Ajrakh" of Zaid Khatri to the innovative "Anatomy" collection by Mubbasirah Khatri, the message was clear: tradition isn't a museum piece—it's a living, breathing fashion force.
Beyond the runway, SKV's "Kala Umang" convocation recently celebrated 34 new graduates, generating over ₹31 lakh in sales through exhibitions in Mumbai and Bengaluru. By bridging the gap between rural roots and urban markets, SKV is ensuring that the "Indian look" doesn't just survive climate change and fast fashion—it leads the conversation with pride, one stitch at a time.
