Imagine an animal that eats its own brain-not because it’s injured, but because it no longer needs it. That’s exactly what happens with the sea squirt, one of the ocean’s strangest creatures.
In its early stage, the sea squirt looks like a tiny tadpole. It can swim freely and has a basic brain, spinal cord, and tail to help it move and explore. But this phase is short-lived.
Once it finds a suitable surface, it attaches itself permanently-and then undergoes a shocking transformation. The sea squirt absorbs most of its nervous system, including its brain.
Why? Because its lifestyle completely changes. As an adult, it becomes a stationary filter feeder, meaning it doesn’t need to move or think in the same way. It simply filters water to absorb nutrients.
Since the brain consumes a lot of energy, getting rid of it helps the sea squirt save energy and survive more efficiently.
It may sound bizarre, but in nature, survival isn’t always about intelligence-it’s about adapting in the smartest way possible.
