In a surprising but strategic move, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to release fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The lanky, sling-armed Sri Lankan had been retained by CSK ahead of the 2025 mega auction for a hefty ₹13 crore, but lingering injury issues and a dip in impact are reportedly influencing the franchise’s decision.
Pathirana burst onto the IPL scene during CSK’s 2023 title run, taking 19 wickets in 12 matches with his deceptive action and consistent swing. However, his recent seasons have been marred by a hamstring injury, and in IPL 2025, he returned just 13 wickets in 12 games at an expensive economy rate of over 10.13 per over. CSK’s coaching staff had earlier flagged his “remodelled” release point—possibly due to tweaks from Sri Lanka Cricket—as one factor behind his inconsistent performance.
While his release suggests CSK is rethinking its death-over bowling core, sources indicate the franchise may still re-enter the auction to try and buy him back at a reduced price.
