Alexandr Wang is Meta’s new Chief AI Officer, tapped in June 2025 after the company made a staggering $14.3 billion investment in his startup, Scale AI. At just 28, Wang now oversees Meta’s entire AI operation under a newly formed division called Meta Superintelligence Labs, which combines its research, product, and infrastructure teams.
Wang hails from New Mexico, born to physicist parents, and began his entrepreneurial journey by dropping out of MIT in 2016 to co-found Scale AI. Scale provides critical annotated data for training AI models — a service used by major players like NVIDIA, Amazon and OpenAI. By 2024, Scale AI was valued at nearly $14 billion, establishing Wang as one of the youngest billionaires in tech.
At Meta, Wang has already begun restructuring the AI division. In an internal memo, he argued that for superintelligence to become real, Meta needs sharp focus on three pillars: research, product, and infrastructure. This move signals Meta’s aggressive bet on Wang’s business-led vision — not just research — to accelerate toward artificial general intelligence, putting him at the heart of Meta’s high-stakes AI future.
