On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Election Commission of India formally initiated the election process for the vacant vice-presidential post following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation . The Commission announced efforts to constitute the electoral college, comprising all elected and nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, in accordance with Article 324 and the Presidential & Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952 .
Additionally, the EC is finalising returning officers for the poll and preparing essential background documentation on prior vice-presidential elections. According to EC announcements, the election schedule – including dates for nomination filing, scrutiny, withdrawal, and voting – will be published “as soon as possible” - typically within 30 days of the notification .
The resignation has triggered a high-stakes electoral contest, with the ruling NDA holding a comfortable majority of over 422 MPs, though the opposition INDIA bloc is actively strategizing around a shared candidate . The vice-presidential election is being closely watched as an important test of parliamentary alliances and democratic procedure.
