In a landmark gathering at the United Nations, over 125 countries rallied behind a two-state solution and jointly called on Israel to commit to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, according to the New York Declaration unveiled at the conference
Co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, the two-day conference—extended due to widespread participation—outlined a phased roadmap to end the Gaza war, transfer territory to the Palestinian Authority, and establish a demilitarized Palestine alongside Israel. The plan calls for Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza, disarm, and transfer governance to the PA, supported by a temporary UN stabilization force.
UN Secretary‑General António Guterres condemned Israel’s ongoing settlement expansion and military actions in Gaza, declaring they jeopardize the future of a two-state resolution and must cease immediately.
While Israel and its longtime ally, the United States, boycotted the conference—criticizing it as "ill‑timed"—key Western nations stepped forward. France committed to recognizing Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly in September, and the UK under Prime Minister Keir Starmer signaled similar plans unless Israel meets specified conditions in coming weeks.
The conference also produced a supplementary statement known as the “New York Call,” endorsed by fifteen Western nations, urging broader international recognition of Palestine as essential to lasting peace.
