In a high-stakes diplomatic announcement, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared Britain will formally recognize the State of Palestine in September, unless Israel takes substantive steps — including endorsing a ceasefire in Gaza, halting West Bank annexations, allowing unfettered UN humanitarian access, and committing to a two-state peace process.
Starmer, who chaired an urgent Cabinet session outside the usual summer recess to address the Gaza crisis, described the humanitarian situation as “appalling” and underscored that Palestinian statehood is an “inalienable right,” not contingent on Israeli decrees.
The UK’s move follows France’s lead, signaling a broader shift in European diplomacy. While more than 140 countries already recognize Palestine, recognition by the UK and France—both permanent UN Security Council members—could mark a major symbolic and political milestone.
Unsurprisingly, Israel strongly rejected the proposal, labeling it a “reward for Hamas” that would derail efforts to reach a ceasefire and hostage release framework.
Domestically, Starmer faces rising pressure: over 250 Members of Parliament across party lines have signed a letter urging recognition, and public sentiment reportedly supports it in polls.
In the coming weeks, the British government will assess compliance with its conditions; the final decision is expected at the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2025
