Many women often dismiss recurring discomfort, fatigue, or irritation as a normal part of life. However, health experts say some everyday habits could be silently affecting intimate health and overall well-being.
Here are five things a gynaecologist says she would never do:
1. Wipe from back to front
Wiping in the wrong direction can transfer bacteria from the anal area to the vagina or urinary tract, increasing the risk of infections. The safer method is always wiping from front to back.
2. Keep period products on for too long
Pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period panties should be changed regularly. Prolonged use can encourage bacterial growth, causing irritation, unpleasant odour, infections, and in rare cases, serious health complications.
3. Wax pubic hair carelessly
Improper or frequent waxing can lead to skin irritation, ingrown hair, minor cuts, and infections. Safe hair removal practices are more important than the method itself.
4. Use scented vaginal washes
The vagina naturally maintains its own balance of bacteria and pH levels. Fragranced washes and harsh products can disrupt this balance, leading to dryness, itching, irritation, or infections.
5. Ignore low iron levels
Constant tiredness should not always be brushed aside. Low iron levels, especially among women with heavy periods, can cause fatigue, dizziness, poor concentration, and anaemia. Regular health check-ups can help detect deficiencies early.
While these habits may seem minor, they can significantly influence both intimate and overall health over time. Paying attention to these everyday practices can help women stay healthier and avoid preventable health issues.
