Though widely considered healthy, foods like apples and mushrooms may trigger bloating in sensitive individuals. A surgeon explains that apples contain fructose and fiber, while mushrooms have resistant starch, both of which ferment in the gut leading to gas, abdominal discomfort, and bloating. Surprisingly, even foods known for their health benefits can disrupt digestion in some bodies.
For those who experience such symptoms, the surgeon recommends swapping these items for more gut-friendly alternatives. Pears can replace apples, as they contain a different type of sugar that's gentler on digestion. Instead of mushrooms, try well-cooked zucchini or bell peppers. These vegetables are low in resistant starch and generally easier to digest, helping reduce bloating while still providing essential nutrients.
The insight underlines a key lesson: “healthy” foods aren’t universally perfect. Understanding individual tolerance and making simple dietary swaps can make a big difference to digestive comfort and overall wellbeing.
