A recent study has revealed that collagen, a protein often praised for its benefits to skin and joints, may actually make type 2 diabetes worse by affecting how the body controls blood sugar.
Collagen is a major part of our skin, bones, and tissues. But in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar can cause collagen to undergo harmful changes. This process, called glycation, leads to the formation of substances known as Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These AGEs make tissues, like blood vessels and skin, stiff and less healthy, worsening complications linked to diabetes.
The research also highlights that when there’s too much or wrongly formed collagen in the body, it can disrupt how cells respond to insulin. This can increase insulin resistance — a major problem in type 2 diabetes.
Interestingly, some small studies suggest that collagen supplements might help lower blood sugar in certain cases by improving insulin function. But scientists warn that the long-term effects of collagen on diabetes are still unclear.
Experts believe more research is needed to understand how collagen affects blood sugar control and whether it can be safely used in diabetes management without causing harm.
