China has revealed that it has been in close communication with India regarding the resumption of direct flights, potentially ending a five-year hiatus that began with the COVID-19 pandemic and strained border tensions. A spokesperson from China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed these discrete yet sustained diplomatic engagements, signalling momentum toward restoring air connectivity between the two nations.
Concurrently, IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, stated that the airline is fully prepared to reinstate routes to China pending final bilateral agreements underscoring operational readiness from the industry side.
This development reflects broader diplomatic progress: earlier this year, both countries agreed in principle to expedite flight restoration and people-to-people exchanges during high-level meetings. Future announcements are likely at multilateral forums such as the SCO summit.
