In Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu police arrested a husband and his father-in-law accused in the tragic dowry-death of a young bride on June 29, 2025, police sources confirmed. The incident occurred after her husband and in-laws allegedly demanded a large dowry—rumoured to include ₹ 70 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and a Volvo car.
The victim, a resident of Tiruppur, reportedly faced persistent harassment from her in-laws over dowry issues. Overwhelmed, she consumed sulphas tablets, a highly toxic agricultural chemical, while travelling to Mondipalayam Temple and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Following her death, police investigation and family testimony prompted the arrest of her husband and father-in-law. Authorities are gathering further evidence and may press charges under Section 304B IPC—the dowry-death statute—as well as related sections for abetment and poisoning .
This case casts a harsh spotlight on the enduring scourge of dowry-related harassment in India. Despite stringent anti-dowry laws, including the Dowry Prohibition Act (1961) and Section 498A IPC, such tragedies continue.
