IIT-BHU drops 5-year dual degrees, now BTech students get more flexible options!

IIT-BHU has announced a major change in its undergraduate structure from the 2025–26 academic session, in line with the National Education Policy. The institute will convert its five-year dual degree programmes into regular BTech seats.

Earlier, students enrolled in these courses automatically pursued both BTech and MTech together. Under the new system, students will first join a four-year BTech programme, and later get the option to continue for a fifth year to earn an MTech, if they choose.

The institute has clarified that no programme is being discontinued. Only the structure is changing to offer more flexibility. Admissions will continue through JEE Advanced, and the total number of undergraduate seats will remain the same.

Students will also get added academic freedom. After a few semesters, they can choose options like a minor degree, second major, or BTech (Honours) based on their interests.

Existing students enrolled in the earlier dual-degree format will continue under the old system, without any change to their course structure.
