Today, on July 31, we mark the 45th death anniversary of playback legend Mohammed Rafi, who left us in 1980 at age 55 . Revered as one of the greatest voices in Indian cinema, his versatility embraced romantic ballads, qawwalis, ghazals, bhajans, and classical numbers across a vast repertoire.
Some of his most unforgettable classics include:
-
“Baharon Phool Barsao” from Suraj (1966), a sublime romantic number that earned him a Filmfare Award and remains a fan-favourite even today.
-
“Chahunga Main Tujhe” from Dosti (1964), a melodic testament to unrequited love—Rafi himself insisted it remain in the film, taking only minimal fees.
-
“Parda Hai Parda” | Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), a high-energy filmi qawwali that topped the Binaca Geetmala charts and showcased his dynamic vocal power .
His emotional nostalgia pieces such as Deewana Hua Badal (Kashmir Ki Kali) and Likhe Jo Khat (Kanyadaan), along with soulful patriotic and devotional songs - like Kar Chalein Hum Fida - complete the extensive canvas of his legacy.
Even decades after his passing, Rafi remains the most streamed Indian singer online, with devotion spanning generations
