In a world where smartphones and social media dominate student life, going completely offline for 24 hours - a full digital detox - has been shown to produce noticeable benefits, even in short experiments. A study in the Industrial Psychiatry Journal explored what happens when people remove digital devices for one full day. While many initially experience discomforts like restlessness or boredom, most report mood improvements, greater calm, better real‐life interactions, and new appreciation for activities often pushed aside by screen time.
Longer detox programs also support this effect. In a two-week social media detox among young adults, limiting use to just 30 minutes per day led to decreased social media addiction, improved sleep, lowered stress levels, and more satisfying relationships. Students reported enhanced focus, less anxiety, and a clearer mind, especially during study sessions.
That said, completely cutting off social media can also reduce positive emotions associated with connection and recognition, according to some studies—suggesting balance is key. For students unsure where to start, even just one screen-free evening or weekend can be a powerful first step toward digital well-being.
