In many metro cities, schoolchildren today are spending over 10 hours a day at school-longer than some working adults. While parents feel reassured that their kids are in a safe environment, experts are warning of serious consequences.
Kids like 11-year-old Rhea begin their day at 6 AM and return home after 5 PM, only to face more studies and homework. With no time for rest, play, or relaxation, children are increasingly showing signs of stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue. School counsellors report that even primary students are becoming withdrawn or irritable.
Back in the 90s, school ended by 1:30 PM, and children had time for naps, playing outdoors, or just doing nothing-all essential for their emotional and cognitive development. But today, this downtime is missing.
While schools claim the long hours allow for holistic learning-robotics, arts, yoga-many kids are simply tired. Experts and parents now argue that a balance is needed. A child’s day should include learning, but also laughter, rest, and free play-because childhood is about growing, not just grinding.
