Motion sickness is a common condition triggered by repeated motion, such as in cars, boats, or planes. It stems from conflicting sensory signals - when the inner ear senses motion that the eyes don't see, or vice versa - disrupting the body's balance system.
Symptoms typically include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sweating, and drowsiness. Some individuals may also experience headaches or a general sense of unease.
Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and travel history; laboratory tests are rarely needed. While the discomfort often subsides once motion stops, some people may feel sick even after travel ends.
Remedies include looking at the horizon, taking naps, chewing gum, fresh air, ginger, and acupressure. Medications like scopolamine, dimenhydrinate, and meclizine can also help, especially if taken before travel.
Preventive tips include sitting where motion is felt least - ike the front seat of a car or over airplane wings - and avoiding reading or facing backward. Exciting new research shows that visuospatial brain training may significantly reduce motion sickness, offering promise for future travel comfort.
