Adolescent back pain often gets brushed off, but Scheuermann's disease might be the real culprit.
This spinal condition, first noted in 1921, mainly hits during the early teen growth spurt (ages 10–12) and causes abnormal spine curvature (kyphosis), pain, and even social discomfort. Though the exact cause isn't clear, it's linked to factors like posture issues, trauma, genetics, and vitamin deficiencies.
Diagnosis involves X-rays, sometimes MRIs, and treatment usually stays non-surgical - think bracing (Milwaukee brace), physical therapy, and NSAIDs. If kyphosis goes past 75° or worsens, surgery might be needed. The gold-standard fix? Posterior spinal fusion with screws and alignment correction.
The key takeaway? Early detection = better outcomes. Parents and teens shouldn't ignore chronic back pain - it's more than just growing pains.
