Imagine getting fined for chewing gum… or for wearing the “wrong” type of shoes. Sounds like a joke, right? But around the world, some laws still exist that feel completely unreal.
Take Singapore, for example. Chewing gum is heavily restricted, and selling it without permission can get you into serious trouble. Then there’s Japan, where being overweight beyond a certain limit (under the “Metabo Law”) can lead to mandatory health checkups and penalties for companies.
In Switzerland, flushing the toilet after 10 PM in some apartments is considered noise pollution. Meanwhile, in Italy, you could be fined for not smiling in public in certain areas yes, seriously.
Things get even stranger. In Australia, it’s illegal to change a light bulb without a licensed electrician in some regions. Over in Thailand, stepping on currency is illegal because it has the king’s image on it.
And then there’s Denmark, where restaurants were once required to serve free water if customers weren’t satisfied with their meals. In Canada, too many coins used for a single payment can technically be refused if it's written into law.
Why do these laws still exist? Some are outdated, some are cultural, and some were created for reasons that made sense years ago but never got removed and that’s the weirdest part. Because somewhere in the world, right now, someone might accidentally be breaking a law… without even realizing it.
