In the heart of Imphal lies something truly unique-Ima Keithel, a 500-year-old market run entirely by women.
Popularly known as the “Mother’s Market,” it is home to over 5,000 women vendors selling everything from fresh produce and fish to traditional handloom textiles and handmade goods.
But this market is more than just a shopping hub. It was born out of necessity when men were sent away for wars, and women stepped up to run households and trade. Over time, it became a symbol of independence and strength.
Even during colonial rule, these women stood united, protested, and protected their space.
Today, Ima Keithel is not just a market-it’s a living example of women empowerment, cultural pride, and resilience that has survived for centuries.
