As India’s economy targets $5 trillion by 2027 and expands into startups, EVs and tech, a growing skills-first shift is reshaping workforce demands. Surveys show nearly 65% of recruiters prefer certified skills or real projects over academic credentials.
Despite millions earning college degrees annually, only 45–54% of graduates are truly job-ready. Less than 5% of the workforce has formal vocational training, and a staggering 88% remain employed in low-competency jobs.
India’s National Education Policy 2020 and National Skill Development Mission promote experiential learning and competency-based qualifications through frameworks like NSQF and PMKVY. Institutions are now partnering with industry to embed internships, hackathons, and project-based assessments into education. For instance, Degree Apprenticeships and certifications in emerging fields like AI or cyber-security drastically boost employability often more than degrees alone.
Stakeholders also call for stronger equity: skills-based hiring must transcend urban privilege, and rural youth need equal access to industry-aligned training.
