On June 4, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a sweeping travel ban, fully barring entry from 12 countries and imposing partial restrictions on seven others, citing national security concerns.
The 12 countries facing a complete travel ban are Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, and Haiti. Partial restrictions apply to nationals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
India is not included in either the full ban or the partial restriction list.
The decision follows a recent antisemitic attack in Boulder, Colorado, allegedly carried out by an Egyptian national who overstayed his visa. Although Egypt is not among the countries listed, the incident prompted Trump to expedite the travel ban, emphasizing concerns over visa overstays and inadequate vetting processes.
Critics argue that the ban disproportionately targets Muslim-majority and African nations, drawing parallels to Trump's 2017 travel ban, which faced significant legal challenges before being upheld by the Supreme Court. Humanitarian organizations have condemned the move, stating it undermines America's values and could strain international relations.
The proclamation exempts lawful permanent residents, current visa holders, Olympic and World Cup athletes, and individuals deemed to serve U.S. national interests. The policy is set to take effect on Monday, June 9, 2025.
