Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on July 20, 2025, that the Centre will move an impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court Justice Yashwant Varma in the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Over 100 Lok Sabha MPs have already signed the motion, meeting the constitutional requirement to initiate proceedings. The motion stems from allegations surrounding a fire at Justice Varma’s Delhi residence in March 2025, where emergency teams discovered burnt or partially burnt cash—fueling accusations of corruption.
A three-member panel led by the Chief Justice of India recommended his removal, citing misconduct. Following Varma’s refusal to resign, that panel submitted its report to the President and Prime Minister. Justice Varma has challenged the findings in the Supreme Court, arguing procedural flaws and lack of evidence, and asserting he was unfairly targeted.
The motion is set to be introduced during the Monsoon Session (July 21–August 21), with its timing to be determined by the Business Advisory Committee. The government is working to garner cross-party support, and the Congress has reportedly coordinated to secure additional MP signatories. If passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses, Varma would become the first judge removed by a parliamentary impeachment—a rare move emphasizing judicial accountability.
