Hepatitis, a liver inflammation, affects millions globally yet remains misunderstood due to common myths. Dr. Rajesh Chandra, Consultant – Gastroenterology at Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, clarifies the facts about its transmission.
Hepatitis A spreads through the faecal-oral route—mainly via contaminated water and food. Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through blood-to-blood contact, such as sharing needles, contaminated razors, unprotected sex, and from mother to child during childbirth.
Myths like genetic transmission or spread through handshakes, hugs, or sharing clothes and utensils are false. Breastfeeding is usually safe unless the mother has cracked, bleeding nipples.
It’s essential to know that hepatitis is preventable with good hygiene, safe practices, and vaccines. Misconceptions can delay treatment and increase risk. Understanding the correct modes of transmission is key to protecting yourself and others.
Always consult a healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and prevention advice. Knowledge and awareness can save lives.
