January 26 stands out in Indian history for events that shaped banking, science, culture and institutional identity. In 1921, the Imperial Bank of India was established — the precursor to today’s State Bank of India (SBI) — laying the foundation for modern banking in the country.
Nearly five decades later, in 1974, President V. V. Giri inaugurated the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Museum at Teen Murti House in New Delhi, commemorating India’s first prime minister and his contributions to the nation’s political and cultural landscape. In 1984, the first unit of the Atomic Energy Production Centre began operations at Kalpakkam, underscoring India’s commitment to scientific and industrial advancement.
January 26 also marks several notable births: Shwetambar Jain scholar Jinvijayji Muni in 1888, Sanskrit master Tarkatirtha Laxmanshastri Joshi in 1901, and actor Sabu (Dastagir) in 1924. The day remembers figures such as cricketer Probir Sen and revolutionary writer V. S. Sarvate, whose legacies continue in sport and literature.
Across sectors — from finance and science to culture and public memory — January 27 reflects India’s multifaceted historical progress, linking institutional beginnings with individual achievements.
